Shimano Personal Flotation Device
In light of some tragic (but sometimes avoidable) drownings in recent years, it has become law in a number of states for people operating or travelling as passengers in small boats or crossing river-mouth bars to be wearing some form of personal flotation device or life jacket when on the water.
Now, as we all know, traditional life jackets are too uncomfortable and bulky to wear for long periods of time and they definitely get in the way of fishing activities, so this is what makes Shimano’s Personal Flotation Device (PFD) such a terrific idea for the fresh and saltwater boatie.
Worn over your shirt or jumper, most times you won’t even know it’s on — until that one time when you really need it most. Pulling on a toggle switch located under a flap on the left side sees the CO2 canister inflate the vest, keeping the wearer afloat until help arrives. The CO2 cartridge has an inflation power of 150 Newtons, which is 50 per cent more than standard.
The jacket can also be inflated via a mouthpiece and there is a whistle attached for attracting attention in darkness or in rough seas. When inflated, the collar is a high visibility yellow, and there is a strip of reflective tape across the shoulders as well.
Shimano PFDs are Australian Standards’ Association compliant (ASA Number 1512) and can support a minimum weight of 60 kilos.
