Fisheries Victoria
'A fortnightly round-up of recreational fisheries management issues'
Fish-e-Fax Issue 197, 7 June 2007
Premier Lake Family Fishing Festival Success
Approximately 190 children enjoyed a day of family fun on Saturday 19 May at the “Go Fishing in Victoria Family Fishing Festival” at Eildon Pondage.
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) hosted a fun-packed day of fishing-related activities that was attended by almost ninety families. Activities included informative workshops with Fisheries Officers, casting clinics and cooking demonstrations. Despite some wet weather underfoot, a range of additional interactive displays and stalls provided by local businesses and producers ensured that there was much to see and do for the whole family. |

Major highlights of the day included:
- Fishing Information Workshop – Fisheries Officers provided informative talks on a range of topics relevant to beginning anglers.
- Kids Fishing Activity – all registered participants received assistance in fishing for purposely stocked rainbow trout.
- Flathead Fred Show – Enjoyed by all. Kids of all ages (including many adults) sang along with Fred and his skinny mate Rod.
- Fly Fishing Tuition Clinic and Fishcare Casting Clinic – Great tuition provided by experts with fun games that are bound to get you hooked.
- Cooking Demonstrations – Local Chef ‘Albert' cooked up a storm with some amazing dishes featuring locally produced trout and Atlantic salmon.
- Other Premier Lakes that will host Family Fishing Days in the near future include Kennington Reservoir (Bendigo) on Sunday 24 June and Lillydale Lake on Saturday 30 June. These events will focus on fishing activities and workshops with larger festivals similar to the Eildon Pondage Festival to be held in September 2007.

Recreational Abalone Fishing Open Days for the 2006/07 Season
The open days for the 2006/07 recreational abalone fishing season in central Victorian waters have now all passed. Anecdotal information by recreational and Fisheries Officers suggests that the compliance with the close season and 60 open days has been generally high.
Fisheries Victoria is currently consulting with Victoria's Recreational Fishing peak body (VRFish) to determine the open days for the 2007/08 season commencing on 1 September 2007, as well as maintaining the current state wide recreational bag limit of five abalone. The proposal is to allocate the sixty open days around weekends, peak holiday periods and public holidays between November 2007 and May 2008 similar to the 2006/07 season.
Fisheries Victoria Inspecting Illegal Use of Opera House Nets
Fisheries Officers are targeting illegal freshwater fishers who are misusing opera house nets. Victorian Fisheries regulations only permit the use of opera house nets in private waters such as farm dams. They are not to be used in public waterways including rivers, streams and impoundments where they may endanger platypus, native water rats and other aquatic wildlife.
Illegal fishers who are caught using the nets will receive a $500 on-the-spot fine. This rule, alongside other regulations such as minimum legal length, daily bag limits and closed seasons for waters north of the Great Dividing Range, help protect spiny freshwater crayfish that are highly vulnerable to over-fishing.
The illegal use of opera house nets in public waterways should be reported to 13FISH by phoning 13 3474.

Release of the Lake Tyers Fisheries Reserve Management Plan
The Minister for Agriculture, Joe Helper declared the Lake Tyers Fisheries Reserve (LTFR) Management Plan on 17 May 2007.
The LTFR Management Plan describes:
- The geography of Lake Tyers, information on recreational fishing activities and other uses/values of the reserve that may affect recreational fishing opportunities;
- Current management arrangements for fishing activities and for other relevant values/uses of the reserve and surrounds;
- Goals, objectives, performance indicators and actions for management of fishing activities in the LTFR; and
- Processes for participating in management of other relevant non-fishing activities in and around the reserve.
Fisheries Victoria prepared the LTFR Management Plan with the assistance of a stakeholder steering committee. The steering committee included an independent chair and representatives from the Fisheries Co-Management Council, the East Gippsland Shire Council, VRFish, Parks Victoria, the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust and the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
Copies of the LTFR Management Plan can be obtained from the LTFR Management Plan page or by contacting the DPI Customer Service Centre on 136 186.
Amendment to Fish-e-Fax Issue 194
Fisheries Victoria would like to make an amendment to a story written in issue 194 that was circulated on 26 April 2007.
Under the heading "2006/07 Native Fish Stocking Summary" it was stated that Recreational Fishing Licence revenue contributed $209,892 to Fisheries Victoria's fish stocking budget of $1.064 million. The correct wording should be that Recreational Fishing Licence revenue of $209,892 supplemented the Fisheries Victoria's fish stocking budget of $1.064 million.
