Hi guys, I'm new to posting so I hope It goes well. I see all to often, Fisho's heading out in their boats, and drop anchor as soon as they see fish on there depth sounders, and what do they catch, " Nothing ". In my experience, if those fish aren't sitting just above a reef, then they are simply passer byes, You maybe lucky and jag one in the tail, but i doubt it. Forget the fish on your sounder and start looking for the Reefs. It can be hard work, but the rewards are terrific. P.s When you do find a Reef, don't leave it to chance, mark the spot with your must have GPS, and give that spot a name based on what you caught. If this post works, I have over 30 years of Salt Water Fishing experience, and I'm more than happy to share. ( The Good and the Bad ).
Cheers for now. |

| seeing fish on the sounder before you fish seems to be a very Queensland and Victorian thing, most fishers in QLD will drive over a spot that has been good before, if nothing "shows" they drive off looking for better pastures, while I agree, that good structure may be still good to fish, even if you have nothing on the sounder, a bit of burley and things can change dramaticly, Victorians (it would seem) sound around until they see their target species on the sounder, like (say ) Snapper, whether their sounder, or their interpretations are right or not is anyones guess, but if it works, and your confident, then so be it, do what works for you. |

Got to admit...I do this - then I'm pretty new to messing around fishing from boats. I think my issue is that I'm thinking that I'm looking for fishy terrain - not reefs per se - maybe dropoffs - maybe channels, sand bars etc and when I also see fish I think - Aha - I am vindicated in my powers of deduction...and I then proceed to not catch much. :(
It's useful having more experienced bods like yourself telling us what your years of observations have shown.
I guess that not having that much experience with using a sounder leads me to get excited when I see what can only be 'fish' - at least it tells me there are some around. Sometimes I'll cruise around in circles and if I then see 'them' again I'll drop anchor and try and get them onboard. Sometimes I'll feel lazy and not move for a while thinking "it still looks pretty fishy to me...besides...where else would I go next". Maybe I need to get an electric motor so I can keep mobile ?

| i had the luxury of using my cast net to see what my sounder was showing when i first got my new boat and it more than helped finding out how to read it properly ie:bream mullet jew flatys herring prawns all school different at different levels after a fair bit of mucking around and adjusting the freqencys now i can usually pick whats down there by looking at the screen offshore took a bit more time and effort but without the cast net finding sructure it has proved invaluable especially for snapper and reefies also good pinnacles channels and ledges to troll for pelagics my sounder is only a cheap navman fish 4432 but after a few weeks i learnt how to read and use it to my advantage , just goes to show that you dont need to spend mega bucks to get serious results my gps is a handheld garmin 72 and is more than adequate so to all those who blame thier cheap gear get over it and just use it. i fish water up to 70mts deep and can still find bait and good ground to fish at that depth for some reason it doesnt pick up fish over about 45mts but i still see smudges that look the same as bait balls in shallower water which usually turn into schools of fish worth catching |

| but yes i have it set to show as a little fishy( i have the sensitivity turned right down to 5 percent which mostly eliminates all the bullshat it can pick up) so if it shows as a fish it usually is (cast net proved this method) come up for a fish i'll show you |

...lol - no - turned that off pretty quickly.
Speaking for myself - I've got the sounder setup to remove the noise but still fairly sensitive - sensitive enough to clearly pickup a ball sinker bouncing on and off the bottom and sensitive enough to pick up the burley trail (and the fish that rise up or follow it down).
