Queensland:

Pinkenba in Queensland-
Access: The ramp is pretty good by Queensland standards
(no cleaning tables, taps, hoses etc but that's to be expected).
The ramp is a good two lanes wide and its pretty sheltered. I often
put the boat in and out myself even with a 15+ knot wind blowing.
Gets a little bit dodgy with a screaming westerly though. The ramp
can be used at all water levels but its a bit easier when its not
dead low tide.
Facilities: The Pinkenba Bait and Tackle shop is located
right next to the ramp and Barry (the owner) always has a good selection
of bait and tackle and even a tip or two. You can also get a hot
feed there during the day at the take away shop next to the bait
and tackle shop.
Parking: There is plenty of car parking and even a couple
of lights as you can see from the photo. A couple of the best features
are that the ramp is free and its frequented by the security guards
from the neighbouring refineries so there is very little trouble
with thieves or vandals.
Barry also tells me that he is planning to do a bit of work around
the ramp and install a cleaning table or two so maybe us Queenslanders
will finally have a ramp to rival those in NSW!

General: The mouth of the river is unpassable at dead low tide.
And can get rough on an outgoing tide. Good access to Lower section
of Capricorn bunkergroup and mouth of Gladstone harbour as well as
the Boyne river itself. More pictures on my website www.crosswinds.net/~barracod/
are taken within 5-6mile of the ramp and a few in the boyne river
too. |

The Calliope River (upriver) on the old highway near Gladstone
QLD.-
Access: Access only for one boat at a time. Mainly used
by ski boats(not a problem though as the fishing areas are not near
the ski area) although smaller fishing tinnies would have access
to Mangrove Jack, Barramundi and other assorted estuary to freshwater
species.
Facilities: Toilets are a short walk away. Ramp is actually
behind the Calliope. Historical(hysterical) Village driver revivor
stop.
Parking: No regulated parking although plenty of space.
Fees: None.

General: Never had any problems with security as there are
usually people camping near the ramp. Watch for crocodiles! They
start about here in Central Qld but there have been sightings further
south. Parts of the river are very shallow, stay in the middle as
there are rocky outcrops just under the water.

Lake Awoonga Dam.
Access: Access is from Highway 1 at Benaraby Qld 10mins
to the dam.

with camping facilties is located at the top with a small kiosk
and toilets. Most people leave their boats in the water so they
can fish early morning or late night and walk down from the top.
Parking: Plenty of parking.
Fees: No fees although a permit (free) is required to fish.
Gate access is from 7am to 8pm.

General:You can take barra all year round here; though you
need to see the rangers to get them tagged for proof of catch location.
It is the water supply for Gladstone Qld. The Gladstone Area Water
Board has done an excellent job stocking with Barramundi, mangrove
jack, mullet and a few others.
